Abstract

Students' health is not limited to the physical dimension, but mental and social dimensions should also be considered. This research was conducted with the aim of examining the content of primary science textbooks from the perspective of mental health literacy. Using the method of directive qualitative content analysis, the text of all the textbooks from the first to the sixth grade was analyzed. They were entered into the Max QDA software. Using a tool consisting of four components of mental health literacy, i.e. Obtaining and maintaining good mental health; Reducing stigma of mental illness; Understanding common mental disorders; Help-Seeking and help-giving, all the textbooks were coded deductively and inductively. The statistical population and the sample were the same and the page was considered as the unit of analysis. We found that the total frequency of sub-components related to the obtaining and maintaining good mental health was 249 over 672 pages. Among the four components of "mental health literacy", the two components of "Understanding common mental disorders" and “reducing stigma of mental illness " were not considered at all. According to the results it is suggested that science textbooks to be revised from the perspective of mental health literacy.
